交流接觸器利用主接點來控制電路,
用接點來導通控制回路。
主接點一般是常開接點,而接點常有兩對常開接點和常閉接點,小型的接觸器也經常作為中間繼電器配合主電路使用。
交流接觸器的接點,由銀鎢合金制成,具有良好的導電性和耐高溫燒蝕性。
交流接觸器動作的動力源于交流通過帶鐵芯線圈產生的磁場,電磁鐵芯由兩個「山」字形的幼硅鋼片疊成,其中一個固定鐵芯,套有線圈,工作電壓可多種選擇。為了使磁力穩定,鐵芯的吸合面加上短路環。交流接觸器在失電后,依靠彈簧復位。

直流電流與交流電流相比較,不存在周期性的電流數值過零點,因此,傳統接觸器開斷電路時,觸頭之間產生的電弧較為強烈,燃弧時間也比較長,以便充分釋放電路中剩余的能量。電弧的燃燒產生高溫和強光,對觸頭表面有嚴重的燒蝕作用,觸頭材料在多次開斷之后逐漸流失,觸頭電磨損嚴重時,導致直流接觸器報廢,不能開斷電路。 [1]
電力電子技術得以迅猛發展,人們將電力電子元件應用到直流接觸器中,巧妙的創造出一種混合式直流接觸器,使得直流接觸器向智能化、可控化邁進了新的一步。這種混合式接觸器利用傳統直流接觸器在閉合導通狀態下觸頭接觸電阻小、導通壓降小的優點,將由反并聯晶閘管和控制模塊單元共同組成的無觸點開關并聯在傳統直流接觸器觸頭上。這種無觸點的電力電子開關分斷電路時不產生電弧,這就避免了傳統接觸器中電弧對觸頭材料的電磨損,也就大大增加了觸頭的使用壽命和可靠性。 [1]

直流接觸器作為應用廣泛的電氣開關之一,其生產和需求數量巨大,在正常使用過程中,電磁鐵線圈一直通電工作,產生電磁吸力,保證鐵芯和銜鐵吸合,帶動動、靜觸頭閉合,接通電路。在上述過程中,線圈本身存在電阻,持續消耗電能,這是直流接觸器主要的使用成本之一,浪費了大量的能源和財產,因此,如何降低直流接觸器的工作耗能,是研究直流接觸器的關鍵點和重難點。直流接觸器永磁操動機構是一種在傳統直流接觸器電磁操動機構基礎上發展而來,將電磁操動機構和永磁鐵相結合的混合型操動機構,不單單使用原有的電磁吸力和彈簧反力作為鐵心吸合與分離的動力,而是加入了永磁鐵對鐵心的吸引力,采用儲能電容充放電提供合閘、分閘電力,通常稱之為“電磁操動,永磁保持,電子控制”。在分、合閘運動過程中,電磁吸力,永磁吸力與彈簧作用力共同作用,在穩定工作過程中,采用永磁吸力代替之前的電磁吸力,保持銜鐵與鐵芯心的吸合狀態。一則,永磁操動機構大量節約了保持線圈的電能消耗,環保節能。二則,永磁體保持吸合與電磁吸合相比,噪音低,無污染。三則,永磁操動機構剔除了電磁機構中一系列復雜繁瑣鎖扣保護裝置,大大提高了接觸器操動機構的工作可靠性,降低了生產工序和成本,減小了接觸器的體積。 [1]
